Issaquah Pool Public Input Meeting-You Missed It!

Posted by Kathleen Cragun

Oct 22, 2008 at Blakely Hall – A lot of info was shared at the meeting and I was glad I went. The presenters were knowledgeable but eager for our input. They had boards that showed possible approaches and gave everyone there two stickers, one green (1st) and one yellow (2nd). After the options were discussed and questions and answers were exhausted, we were asked to choose our first and second favorite idea with our green and yellow stickers. Three boards seemed to get the most votes. I felt that it would be best for Issaquah residents to improve the Boehm pool AND put a second one in the Highlands. I was not alone. This is expensive, however, due to increased costs to construct and operate two facilities. This was option E.

  • Highlands Pool / New Aquatic Center
  • 8 Lane 25-yard stretch lap pool (adequate deck for swim meets)
  • Raised spectator seating for 300
  • Indoor recreation pool (water surface 4000sf) with slides, zero depth entry, current channel, and interactive play features
  • Outdoor spray ground (3000-4000sf)
  • Locker rooms (conventional and family)
  • Birthday party/special events rooms
  • Entry, Front desk, offices, guardroom and the first aid room

Boehm Pool would be retained with Minor Improvements

  • Inprove entry
  • New front desk/expand staff area
  • New windows/exterior insulation
  • New expanded locker rooms (conventional and family)
  • Elevator to access upper level
  • Replace bulkhead/replaster pool
  • Improve pool mechanical system

Six options were discussed, a possibility would be to have ONE super duper, even more awesome facility either at the Boehm Pool site OR at the Issaquah Highlands location. There are pros and cons to all, of course.

There were about 80 people at the meeting, there has been a survey of 300 people and there was a meeting in September that about 60 were at. If there are more meetings, take the oportunity to put in input if you (or your children) feel strongly about the pool. It is an important thing for Issaquah now and in the future and you really can make a difference if you participate.

This photo shows at the top the improved Boehm Pool and at the bottom the Highlands (Plateau) Pool. This was Plan E.
